It can typically be found in arid, sandy or stony soils, but is also able to thrive in clay, alkaline soils, dry conditions, and occasional flooding. Its compact, finely textured foliage forms a low mound and is adorned with small, pointed seed heads. It gradually expands through short rhizomes.
